Postpartum Depression or Postpartum Anxiety? What’s the difference?

Most new mothers – experts estimate about 80% — experience mood swings and weepiness during the first 2-3 weeks after giving birth. Sometimes called “the baby blues”, this is a normal adjustment period and resolves without any medical assistance.

But if symptoms persist beyond this period, you might be experiencing postpartum depression or anxiety.

Symptoms of postpartum depression may include feeling sad or hopeless, having difficulty bonding with the baby, experiencing changes in appetite or sleep patterns, feeling fatigued, and having difficulty concentrating or making decisions.

Symptoms of postpartum anxiety may include feeling a constant sense of worry or dread, racing thoughts, changes in your sleep or appetite, restlessness, or even physical symptoms like dizziness or nausea.

If you’re experiencing any of these symptoms, reach out for support.

Our team has collated an extensive list of resources and partnered with compassionate medical professionals across OC to provide you with the advice and referrals you need.
